Highway 5 - Box Canyon Chain-Up and Chain-Off Project

The scope of work includes increasing the capacity of the existing chain-up area from 6 trucks to 63 trucks (or storage for 120 trucks) and constructing a new chain-off area approximately 6 km north of the chain-up area at the summit of the hill for up to 15 trucks. The project includes a number of safety improvements such as upgrading an existing 90 km/h curve to 110 km/h consistent with the design standard for the corridor, addressing substandard cross-fall, upgrading a substandard runaway lane, upgrading a substandard exit ramp/deceleration lane, improving 2 turn-a-rounds that do not meet design criteria and increasing the shoulder width to 3 meters to allow vehicles to park out of traffic when they are queued up waiting to access the chain-up and chain-off areas.
