The Highway Construction Project for Honduras provides finance to support: 1) the construction of a paved highway of 72 kilometers from Buffalo to Puerto Cortes which will connect the country's most important port on the Atlantic coast with the national highway network; 2) the construction of bridges and culverts on the existing part of the Western Highway from Chamelecon to Santa Rosa de Copan to provide an all-weather highway; 3) the completion of the pavement of the Southern Highway from Tegucigalpa to the intersection with the Inter-American Highway; and 4) the preparation of final phase plans and specifications for the extension of the Western Highway from Santa Rosa de Copan to the Salvadorean border. The total cost of the project is estimated at Lempira 21.0 million (US $10.5 million) of which the equivalent of US$ 5.5. million will be in foreign currency. The local currency cost will be met by a loan from the United States Development Loan Fund.
