The Highway Maintenance Project for Haiti will assist in financing the implementation of a highway development program. It is intended to be a first step in Haiti's economic development. Agriculture is an important industry in the country that has not been developed to its full potential because of an inadequate highway system. Most of the important agricultural centers do not have a reliable road connection with a national road. Many of the national roads are unfit to handle commercial traffic. The project will help to solve this problem by improving the roads and highways in Haiti. Its components are: 1) organization and development of a Maintenance Division in the Highway Department and the training of its personnel; 2) provision of necessary equipment, materials, and supplies; and 3) improvement to the level of serviceability and subsequent routine maintenance of approximately 1,160 kilometers of roads. These advances will improve the highway system in order to further agricultural production and economic development in Haiti.
