Description | The Highway Maintenance Project for Honduras will assist in financing the development of the transportation system. Economic development in Honduras has been seriously hampered due to the lack of adequate transport facilities and the high cost of transportation. An expanded and properly maintained highway system is needed in order to connect the many isolated population centers in the country. It will also help to widen the domestic agricultural market and give access to markets in neighboring countries. The project will accomplish this goal by: 1) establishing and equipping a road maintenance organization, which also involves the reorganization of the Highway Department; 2) providing consulting services and specialized technicians; and 3) conducting preliminary engineering studies required for the improvement, reconstruction, and new construction of the various sections of the Northern and Western Highway. These improvements will modernize the transportation system and promote economic development in Honduras. |
