Description | The Highway Construction Project for Nicaragua will assist in financing the construction of 266 kilometers of asphalt paved highways. There are approximately 2,415 kilometers of roads of all types in Nicaragua. They are mostly dirt trails, suitable only for ox carts and pack animals. Approximately 1,590 kilometers of the roads are impassable during the rainy season. The remaining 825 kilometers of roads are suitable for all weather traffic. However, only 235 kilometers of these roads are paved. In order to modernize the highway system in Nicaragua, the project will: 1) construct new roads to serve the three regional groups in the country, North, East-West, and Western; 2) procure construction equipment and machinery; and 3) purchase construction materials, expendable items, and hand tools. These new additions will promote the agricultural and economic development of Nicaragua by opening new uncultivated lands for crop production and exportation and providing more safe and reliable transportation routes for travelers and commercial drivers. |
