Description
Description | The Highway Construction and Maintenance Project for Guatemala will assist in financing the completion of two highways and the implementation of a maintenance and betterment program. Agriculture is the principal source of national income in Guatemala and gives employment to over seventy-five percent of the working population. In order to increase agricultural development, the current road system must be reconstructed, upgraded, and maintained to ensure the safe and easy transportation of goods. The project will accomplish this goal in three stages. The first stage is the implementation of a maintenance and betterment program. Its components are: 1) establishment of a proper organization; 2) construction of workshops and storehouses with adequate facilities for maintenance and repair of road equipment; and 3) procurement of appropriate road construction and maintenance equipment. The second stage is completion of the construction of the Atlantic Highway. It will be an all weather, paved highway, 298 kilometers long, between Guatemala City and Puerto Barrios. The third and final stage is completion of the construction of the Pacific Highway. It will be a 348 kilometer long, all weather, paved highway, running from the Mexican border to the Salvadoran border. Several bridges and culverts will also be built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Highways to important centers in Guatemala. These new additions will help to develop an extensive highway network in Guatemala. |
