Description | The 67-year-old Hirakud Dam, the world's longest earthen dam located across the Mahanadi river near Sambalpur, Odisha, requires a major overhaul to address structural concerns such as superficial cracks and cavities upstream of the reservoir. The project includes underwater treatment under DRIP 3, construction of an additional spillway to handle increased water release capacity, and automation of gates. The Central Water Commission has recommended the additional spillway to manage a Probable Maximum Flood of 24.6 lakh cusec, up from the current capacity of 15 lakh cusec. Routine maintenance is funded by the state government, while major schemes are funded by the central government. |
