Description

Description

The project will undertake a chimney restraint and roof replacement for the garage of the Historic Joy Kogawa House in Vancouver, to increase available programming space to allow for physical distancing to meet better COVID-19 safety guidelines and to create a fully accessible facility for not-for-profit educational tours about the internment experience of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. The repairs are needed to create a functional auxiliary space where participants can gather safely and at physical distance before admission to timed-entry educational tours. Teachers are already booking tours for elementary and secondary school classes. The facility was built in 1912 and is more than a hundred years old. The current garage roof is leaking and water inflow has led to rot of interior drywall. Repair to this auxiliary building will allow the not-for-profit to upgrade educational tour programming by creating a safe space where educational tour participants can gather before timed entry. The project works include: -repoint and seismically restrain masonry brick chimney; -remove fireplace exhaust; -remove all existing roofing and replace; -replace gutters with aluminum in appropriate colour; -repair or replace soffits and facia boards; -install roof-mounted renewable energy system with solar panels; -site services; -hazardous material remediation and removal; and -all related works.
