Historic Residences and Downtown Office Building in Columbus

The 2026 Most Endangered Sites list also includes three residences and a Downtown office building in Columbus. One residence at 871 Carpenter St. on the South Side, built in 1872 with camel-back masonry, is rare and still standing. Two other residential masonry buildings in German Village, built in 1890, are deteriorating due to neglect but are protected by the National Register of Historic Places. The Downtown office building at 50 W. Gay St., built in 1957 in Midcentury Modern style with red granite, Indiana Limestone curtain walls, and a rooftop neon sign, is owned by the city and has been vacant since 2018.
