Description
Description | The FC HIV Prevention measure supports South Africa in combating the HIV pandemic and consists of the following components: a) Mobile HIV testing services On behalf of the Ministry of Health (NDoH), local NGOs organized mobile testing and counseling services on HIV, tuberculosis and other diseases for selected high-risk areas in the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga. These include door-to-door visits, testing campaigns at workplaces and training centers, in central public places or in front of clubs and bars. Information and awareness-raising campaigns complement these services. From 2016 to 2019, 1.08 million people were reached through this. Around 50,000 people who were diagnosed with HIV infections were referred to a health facility for treatment. b) Peer education As part of the Activate! program, funded by the South African DG Murray Trust, young adults are supported and trained to take responsibility for themselves and society. This includes behavioral changes to reduce risk-taking with regard to HIV and AIDS, alcohol and drug consumption and violence, particularly against women. From 2012 to 2016, 2,500 young adults took part in the program and now form the Activate! youth network. c) Conditional Rewarding Programs This component was implemented by the South African youth organization LoveLife and aimed to support sustainable behavioral changes in the area of sexual and reproductive health among young people through a bonus program. The bonus system was based on an internet portal with youth-friendly information and was used by around 100,000 young people. d) During the COVID-19 pandemic, EUR 3 million was also made available for the procurement of protective clothing and laboratory diagnostics and EUR 13 million for the procurement of cold chain logistics to support the vaccination campaign. |
