Hohokam Irrigation Canal System Reuse by Arizona Settlers

reused/operational

In the late 1800s, settlers in Arizona discovered and reused the ancient irrigation canals built by the Hohokam people centuries earlier. These canals carried water from the Salt and Gila rivers to irrigate fields across the desert, enabling farming and community establishment in the arid environment. The canal systems required constant maintenance and cooperative water management among desert communities to sustain agriculture and survival.
