Description | The Hoover Dam was built to tame the unpredictable Colorado River, which caused disastrous floods in the early 1900s. Construction began in 1931, drawing thousands of men from across the country to the harsh, barren southern Nevada desert in search of work. About 21,000 men worked on the dam, using about 4,000,000 cubic yards of concrete and 88 million pounds of plated steel, making it the largest dam of its time. The dam was completed in just under five years, from April 1931 to March 1936, two years ahead of schedule. Today, it controls flooding on the Colorado River, provides water to more than 16 million people, and powers more than 500,000 homes, credited with helping make the modern Southwest possible. |
