Hyundai E&C received an order to build Hotel Hyundai Gyeongju within Bomun Tourist Complex in Gyeongju from Geumgang Industrial Development. Much larger in size than other hotel buildings, Hotel Hyundai Gyeongju has four façades with an S-shaped curve design, and they look different depending on viewing angle. Hotel Hyundai Gyeongju sought to differentiate itself from its competitors by offering a convention hall accommodating about 1,000 people, a bowling alley and a multipurpose sports hall.The construction of Hotel Hyundai Gyeongju began in January 1990 and was completed in September 1992. The Hotel Hyundai Gyeongju project was awarded at the first Korea Architecture Award hosted by the Seoul Economic Daily and the Ministry of Works in October 1992 and at the 12th Korean Institute of Architects International Competition in 1993.As Hotel Hyundai Gyeongju is located along the Bomunho Lake famous for its beautiful views in one of Korea’s oldest cities with a thousand years of history, the hotel has remained one of best tourist attractions in the ancient city. Its construction, however, was considered one of the most challenging ones at that time.To make the most of its characteristics of a leisure hotel, Hyundai E&C constructed both basic facilities such as rooms and a convention hall, and sports facilities including a basketball court and a bowling alley.The builder paid careful attention to the entire process of the construction ranging from steel framework to room floor plans so as to materialize the flowing, S-shaped design.  Hyundai E&C focused on achieving precision in the construction through the introduction of dry construction between rooms and specialized construction methods for waterproofing and soundproofing.
