Description

Hrazdan is a thermal power plant in located in the Kotayk province. The construction for the fifth unit of the plant started in 1980 but it was stopped following the Soviet Union collapse. The plant was intended to have an installed capacity of 480MW In March 31, 2006 Gazprom and the Government of the Republic of Armenia signed a 25-year agreement which laid out the principles of Gazprom's participation in gas and power projects in Armenia. According to the agreement Gazprom planned to increase its stake in ArmRosGazprom and was to acquire the incomplete facility. At the time Gazprom committed to invest more than US$200million on completing the construction for the fifth unit. Gazprom claims to have invested over US$450 million in finishing the construction of the unit and installing the state-of-the-art steam and gas turbines. It was expected that the plant would be connected to the Armenian national grid in January 2012.
