The project is now expected to cost between £87.7bn and £102.7bn and will not be completed until 2043, 17 years later than originally planned. The project includes construction of a 1km bat protection tunnel in Buckinghamshire, a reduced maximum train speed, and a 2km spur of track ending in a field in Staffordshire. Despite £46.2bn spent, no railway track has been laid yet due to delays in civil works. The northern leg to Manchester and Leeds has been cancelled, with properties bought for this leg lying empty. |
