Description

The Huayanli Shikumen complex, a cluster of 1920s-30s historic brick and wood Shikumen houses in Shanghai, was relocated using 432 tiny robots to allow construction of a new underground transit hub beneath it. The project preserved the heritage buildings above ground while integrating them with new underground facilities including a shopping mall, car park, and subway interchange. The relocation involved advanced engineering techniques including robotics, AI, BIM, and laser scanning to move the 7,500-tonne complex through narrow alleys without demolition.
