Concurrently, a new infrastructure project called the Gateway project is underway to build two new tunnel tubes to augment the existing ones. The Gateway project includes construction activities such as building a roadway bridge on Tonnelle Avenue, preparing the Palisades Tunnel site for new tunnel boring machines, and constructing concrete casing in the Hudson Yards train yard. The existing tunnels are maintained to avoid critical failure until the new tunnels are completed, after which the old tunnels will be renovated sequentially. |
