Description

Description

A US$16 billion railway megaproject involving the construction of two parallel 2,210-meter tunnels under the Hudson River, connecting Weehawken, New Jersey to 12th Avenue in Manhattan. The project aims to replace the existing North River Tunnel, expand railway capacity, and resolve a historic bottleneck in the busiest railway corridor in the USA. The contract for a decisive stage of the project was awarded for US$1.29 billion to a consortium of Traylor Bros., Walsh Construction, and Skanska. The project includes tunnel boring with custom machines, installation of precast concrete linings, soil stabilization, and reinforcement of bridge foundations. The new tunnels are expected to open in 2035, followed by revitalization of the old tunnels.
