Description | This project involves removing approximately 500 wooden piles left from the burned Pier 68 freight pier in the Hudson River mud, which pose a hazard to the boring machines planned to tunnel under the river starting in 2028. The Gateway Development Commission approved an $88 million change order to a contract held by Weeks Marine to extract these piles, some of which are tree trunks about 50 feet long. Piles that break during extraction will be grouted in place, and the holes will be filled and the soil firmed up. This work is necessary to prepare the riverbed for the second pair of boring machines designed for mixed ground conditions. The pile removal is scheduled to start late in 2026 and must be completed before boring under the river begins in 2028. |
