Description
Description | The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel is a 9,117-foot-long underwater vehicular tunnel under the East River in New York City. It connects Brooklyn and Manhattan, carrying four traffic lanes and serving over 60,000 vehicles each weekday, including 30 express bus routes. The tunnel was designed by Chief Engineer Ole Singstad and opened in 1950 as the world's longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel. It was constructed using cut-and-cover and shield-driven methods, with an innovative dewatering system near the Brooklyn portal. Originally named the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, construction began in 1940 and was completed in 1950 after delays due to World War II. It was renamed in 2012 for Hugh L. Carey, a former New York governor and congressman. |
