It has twin tubes with four lanes of traffic and serves over 60,000 vehicles each weekday, including 30 express bus routes. The tunnel was constructed using shield-driven and cut-and-cover methods, took 10 years to complete due to World War II shortages, and opened in 1950. It is the longest continuous underwater vehicular tunnel in the U.S. and was designated a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2026. |
