Description | The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel is a 1.7-mile twin-tube underwater vehicular tunnel connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan beneath the East River. It carries four lanes of traffic and serves more than 60,000 vehicles each weekday, including 30 express bus routes. The tunnel was designed by chief engineer Ole Singstad and opened to traffic on May 25, 1950. It was constructed using innovative cut-and-cover and shield-driven techniques, along with a pioneering system of radial wells for groundwater management. Construction began in 1940 and took a decade to complete due to World War II material shortages. Originally known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, it was renamed in 2012 to honor former New York Governor and Congressman Hugh L. Carey. |
