Description

Description

Opportunity Humber River Regional Hospital is one of Ontario’s largest regional acute care hospitals, serving more than 850,000 residents in the northwest Greater Toronto Area, one of Canada’s fastest growing and most ethnically diverse communities. Prior to redevelopment the hospital saw an average of 95,000 patient visits annually and had a maternal newborn program that delivered approximately 4,600 babies each year.  In order to meet future demand for services the Province decided to build a new state-of-the-art acute care facility constructed to achieve three main objectives—lean, green and digital— in order to improve efficiency and the patient experience. Innovations The project resulted in North America’s first “lean” (designed to enhance the flow of people and use resources efficiently), green (designed to adhere to sustainability principles) and fully digital hospital. Results Highlights of the new hospital include: Increased capacity from 549 to 656 beds; Expanded emergency services to accommodate approximately 15 per cent more visits; Increased specialized geriatric services including clinics, therapy sessions and medical consultation services; Modern diagnostic equipment for detailed, accurate patient diagnosis and treatment; and Updated infectious disease containment systems to monitor and prevent a broad range of infections. The hospital can handle upwards of 107,000 emergency visits per year complemented by a Finch Street site that will be able to care for an additional 30,000 emergency visits per year. Eighty per cent of rooms are single patient rooms with alcoves for family accommodations The 1.8 million square foot hospital resulted in reduced wait time and will be able to accommodate future growth. Highlights of the environmentally friendly design include: Building materials with recycled content and diversion of 75 per cent of construction waste from landfills; Reducing indoor water use by 35 per cent by using low flow water fixtures; Minimizing solar heat gain by installing reflective roofing (50 per cent of the building features a green roof); and Sustainable landscaping elements  “Plenary Health Care Partnerships is proud to have achieved this major project milestone, on-time and on-budget.
