Description

Description

The City of San Mateo’s Sustainability & Infrastructure Committee voted unanimously to keep the bike lanes on Humboldt Street. The Commission also endorsed traffic calming measures, street lighting improvements, and exploration of a permit parking program for the city's North Central neighborhood. The bike lanes were installed in 2022 and had removed over 100 parking spaces. Removing the bike lanes and installing bike boulevards was estimated to cost $1.5 million, but the city faces budget deficits and a large backlog of capital improvement projects. External grant funding would not be available for projects that remove bike lanes, and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority would not fund projects that downgrade safety.
