Huron Co-operatives Rural Broadband Improvement Project

The local service providers (LSPs) of Huron County are committed to working together to go the ’last mile’ in connecting rural residents to highspeed broadband access. This infrastructure is critical to the social and economic development of our rural region. Without it, our citizens are stranded and not able to participate in the digital economy, access information or use vital online services. As expressed by the Huron County Warden in his letter of support (see attached), expanding broadband service to residents is a top priority of County Council. This infrastructure is costly and public funding is needed to supplement the capital loans required by LSPs to build and operate it. With the provincial and federal governments as partners, this project will connect a total of 929 homes, dozens of small businesses and one school with download speeds greater than the minimum Industry Canada target standard of 5Mbps. This project will touch several communities across the county at one time and represents the largest concurrent broadband expansion in Huron County in over a decade.
