Hutan Harapan: Supporting the sustainable safeguarding of the first Ecosystem Restoration Concession in Indonesia

Hutan Harapan (98,555 ha) represents 1/4 of the remaining lowland rainforests in Sumatra, one of the most species-rich terrestrial ecosystems on earth. Harpan was the first ERC (Ecosystem Restoration Concessions) in Indonesia to be successfully supported by IKI (International Climate Initiative) 2009-14 and, despite difficult conditions, is considered a model for other ERCs, among other things due to the complex conflict environment, the lessons learned and the significant contribution to carbon storage and biodiversity protection. The project goal is to sustainably manage and rehabilitate the remaining forest in the project area with the help of strategic landscape partnerships with local communities. The project will help to curb illegal land grabbing, ensure support for local communities in the broader landscape and develop important business activities to ensure operational business and implementation of a long-term business plan as an integral part of a sustainability strategy.
