The Sichuan Provincial Highway Project will assist the Government in meeting the road transport demand in the most important and congested corridor in Sichuan Province and in improving management of the provincial road network by introducing modern planning and management techniques, including training. Specifically the project comprises, the construction of a 340km high-standard highway between Chengdu and Chongqing and the reconstruction of 105km of key rural roads. The project will finance technical assistance for the introduction of improved road planning by starting preparation of a road data bank, and the introduction of paved road evaluation as a basis for a pavement strengthening program. The loan will provide for staff training in the various fields of the road subsector. Finally, the loan will finance assistance in highway related research and modernization of design, construction and materials specifications, and in civil works contract documentation.
