Description

Description

Spanish and UK scientists have successfully tested a hybrid radioisotope and solar power system, developed under a European Space Agency-backed programme. The system combines radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) with solar arrays to provide continuous and flexible power for spacecraft operating in extreme environments such as the Moon and Mars. The hybrid system uses solar power during peak sunlight and americium-241-based RTGs during darkness, with a power management system allowing switching between the two sources to optimize performance and reduce spacecraft mass. The project was carried out by the University of Leicester in collaboration with University of Oviedo and University of Vigo in Spain, with validation tests conducted at Space Park Leicester and involvement of spinout company Perpetual Atomics.
