The project will increase Hyderabad's water supply by 135 Mld, or about 23%, and will reduce the vulnerability of the supply to drought. There are four major project objectives, which are to : 1) provide health, economic efficiency and environmental benefits through improvement in the water supply, improvement in the collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater, and reducing the number of households with unsafe excreta disposal facilites; 2) strengthen the management, technical and financial performance of sector institutions; 3) ensure that people displaced by Singur Dam and Reservoir have an opportunity to improve or maintain their productive base and income earning capacity; 4) prepare future urban and water supply sanitation projects. The project has the following six components : a) Manjira Phase 3 Stage 2 scheme to transmit, treat, store and pump 135 Mld of water from Singur Dam Reservoir; b) rehabilitation and strengthening of existing water system; c) rehabilitation and strengthening ( not extension ) of the existing sewerage system, including provision of additional sewage treatment works; d) household latrine program; e) resettlement and rehabilitation of people involuntarily displaced by the Singur Dam and Reservoir; and f) institutional strengthening through technical assistance to and personnel training in HMWSSB.
