Description | Engineering firm Wood will collaborate with start-up Eclipse Energy to produce hydrogen from disused oil wells using microbes. The project aims to repurpose existing oil reservoirs into hydrogen extraction sites by injecting water, microbes, and nutrients into depleted oil wells, turning them into underground bioreactors that break down remaining hydrocarbons into hydrogen. The target price for hydrogen production is $0.5 per kilogramme, equivalent to natural gas prices. Eclipse Energy produced its first hydrogen molecules from an oil field in California's San Joaquin Basin in June 2025 and plans to progress multiple projects in 2026 with Weatherford as an execution partner. Wood will provide engineering design, assessment, and expertise. |
