Hydropower plant rehabilitation programme

The program for the rehabilitation of hydroelectric power plants aims to ensure the operational capability of the Aswan High Dam (2,100 MW) and Aswan II (270 MW) hydroelectric power plants by rehabilitating generator excitation and control systems, turbine controllers and the power plant control technology. The project and the associated rehabilitation measures follow on from the now successfully completed project to rehabilitate the generators of the Aswan High Dam. The Aswan High Dam and Aswan II hydroelectric power plants make an important contribution to securing and stabilizing the Egyptian power supply. With a maximum total capacity of 2,370 MW, the two power plants represent around 7% of the total Egyptian energy generation capacity. The rehabilitation project will therefore continue to ensure the environmentally friendly electricity generation of the two hydroelectric power plants and make a significant contribution to the Egyptian power supply and global climate protection. The total costs amount to up to around EUR 24 million. In addition to an Egyptian contribution, financing (network financing) of EUR 18.6 million is planned (of which EUR 6 million is from budget funds and EUR 12.6 million is from KfW funds). The borrower is the Arab Republic of Egypt, represented by the Central Bank (CBE). The program sponsors are the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) and its legally independent subsidiary, the Hydro Plant Generation Company (HPGC). The HPGC is the owner and operator of the two hydroelectric power plants. Both program sponsors are long-standing and established partners of the KfW Development Bank.
