Description
Description | This project implemented by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) is a new interchange between I-40 and Radio Rd. in the City of El Reno, 24 miles west of downtown Oklahoma City. The diamond-shaped interchange includes a new five-lane bridge over I-40. It improves safety and interstate access, and helps to accommodate regional economic growth. It removes heavy truck traffic from local routes in El Reno accessing the city's industrial district where oil and gas companies maintain warehouses and offices. Seventy Seven Energy, then known as Chesapeake Energy Corp., proposed in 2012 that it would pay the state's share of the of the construction costs and secure the necessary right-of-way for access to I-40 from Radio Road. The energy company owns several businesses along Radio Road near I-40 and the new interchange provides better access and opportunity for business expansion along the corridor. The City of El Reno completed a companion project to widen Radio Road to four lanes between I-40 and SH 66, a half-mile to the north in advance of the interchange's opening. |
