I-40 Rebuild Project

The project involves rebuilding a five-mile stretch of Interstate 40's eastbound lanes near the Tennessee border that were destroyed by flooding from Hurricane Helene. The rebuild includes stabilizing the embankment with soil nail walls, rolled concrete retaining walls, and interlocking pipe pile walls to enhance resilience against future floods. A borrow site in Pisgah National Forest is used to source rock materials locally, reducing costs and construction time. Temporary infrastructure such as a causeway, haul road, and steel truss bridges are constructed to facilitate the work. The project is estimated to cost $1.4 billion and is expected to be completed by 2028.
