Description | The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is rebuilding four miles of the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near the Tennessee state line, which were washed away by flooding from Hurricane Helene. To obtain the necessary stone for the highway roadbed, NCDOT will blast a 40-acre quarry in Pisgah National Forest. To mitigate environmental impact, NCDOT will purchase additional land to add to the forest, build a new bridge to replace a ford on Buzzard Roost Road, and create nine new wildlife and aquatic organism crossings. The project aims to restore the forest and improve ecological flow in the Pigeon River Gorge area. |
