I-696 Construction Project

The Michigan Department of Transportation is undertaking a construction project on an eight-mile stretch of I-696 from I-75 to the Lodge in Oakland County, Michigan. The project involves paving concrete and working on 60 bridges throughout the corridor. The eastbound side work is about 75% completed, with the next focus on setting 105 concrete beams for the Church Street plaza bridge. The eastbound lanes were shut down in March between Lahser Road in Southfield and I-75 in Royal Oak, affecting 100,000 drivers daily. The eastbound lanes will remain closed through next year, and westbound lanes will be restored in a few months. The project is expected to maintain three lanes and exit ramps to I-75, Woodward, Southfield, and Lahser/Telegraph. The estimated cost is around $275 million, with completion expected by fall 2027.
