I-70 West Vail Pass Auxiliary Lane Project

The project involves adding a new eastbound bridge with safer turns and a third eastbound lane of travel along about 3 miles on Interstate 70 at Vail Pass. It aims to increase safety and reduce closure times on the steep and winding section of I-70 mountain corridor. The project includes demolition of an old highway bridge, construction of a new wider bridge with a larger turning radius, and a new eastbound auxiliary lane widening the highway from two to three lanes from mile posts 187 to 190. Additional improvements include new variable message signs for quicker closure notifications, gentler curves, wildlife crossings, and avalanche and rockfall mitigation systems.
