I-77 South Toll Lane Project

NCDOT is planning to add toll lanes to an 11-mile stretch of Interstate 77 from uptown Charlotte to the South Carolina border. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion and crashes by adding express toll lanes. The design includes elevating the highway in uptown neighborhoods, which has raised concerns among residents and environmentalists due to impacts on parks, greenways, and homes, including eminent domain acquisitions in the Wilmore neighborhood. NCDOT is currently conducting a community survey and public engagement, with a request for proposals to developers delayed until June. Charlotte City Council is considering a resolution to pause irreversible actions on the project until certain community and design concerns are addressed.
