Description
Description | Iceland’s relationship with the EU exemplifies differentiated integration. While not an EU member, Iceland participates in the EEA and Schengen Agreement and aligns with most EU policies within the common market. However, shifting Arctic and North Atlantic geopolitical dynamics are increasing pressure on Iceland’s role in European security and transatlantic relations. Recent crises have underscored the growing relevance of EU defence policies, even for non-member states like Iceland. Meanwhile, discussions on Iceland’s EU accession have resurfaced, with a referendum on resuming accession talks planned by 2027. As a result, understanding the EU’s evolving role in Arctic security, energy resilience, and defence cooperation has become increasingly critical for policymakers, scholars, and the public. To address these challenges, Bifröst University is applying for a Jean Monnet Chair to revitalise European Studies with a focus on Arctic security and Iceland’s strategic role in European governance. The initiative will introduce three new courses covering EU security policy, Nordic and Arctic governance, and Iceland’s evolving relationship with the EU. Beyond teaching, the project will support policy-relevant research on Arctic security, hybrid threats, and European defence strategies. Additionally, the initiative will enhance public engagement through policy forums, debates, and digital outreach, fostering evidence-based discussions on European security and Iceland’s evolving role. |
