Description

The project comprises the construction of the first phase of a floating solar PV plant at Kariba Dam, Zimbabwe. The sponsoring organisation of Zimbabwe's industrial power users Intensive Energy User Group (IEUG) have secured a loan of $250m from the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to develop the project. The bank showcased its backing during a meeting of the Africa Investment Forum held in Rabat, Morocco from 4 December to 6 December 2024. The Group established the company Green Hybrid Power Pvt Ltd (GHP) to officially sponsor the project. The targeted capacity of phase I is 250MW, planned by mid-2026. The project at Kariba Dam can be expanded to 1GW of solar capacity, implemented in phases of 250MW, with each phase costing $250m.
