Ignace Water Conservation Project

The project entails three measures. One is leak repair in the distribution system. Another is universal metering for all users and another is installation of recirculating pump/tank units in certain properties. It is estimated that the Township is losing up to 50% of its water. It is unknown how much is being lost in the distribution system and how much is being lost by water users. In the fall of 2015 the Township will be undertaking a leak detection survey on the water distribution system. We expect the survey to reveal leaks. The Township will then engage a contractor to repair them. This work will involve excavating to replace leaking pipes and fittings. Some of this work may be scheduled for the 2017 season in order to avoid interfering with water metering. Currently only approximately 40 of our estimated 650 water users are metered. In the fall of 2015 the Township through a request for proposal process is intending to select a company to supply and install water meters. We are looking for a type of meter that can be read remotely. The plan is to have the meters installed in the 2016 season. Frozen waterlines are prevalent in Ignace. Rather than run water through a bleeder valve or tap, the Township wants to supply and install recirculating pump/tank units at properties where waterlines frequently freeze. The units, placed before the meter, fill up. When full the pump starts and sends the water back into the distribution system. The constant movement of water prevents freezing. The plan is to have these units installed at the same time meters are.
