Description

TxDOT is developing preliminary plans for the expansion of I-20 in Smith and Gregg counties. The project limits extend into Van Zandt and Harrison counties for a short distance to provide logical project end points. The overall project length is 52.5 miles. The project originated with the I-20 East Texas Corridor Study, which was completed in December 2014. Enhancements are aimed at improving safety, averting long-term congestion, as well as preserving the existing highway. Details Enhancements to this corridor include: Widening from a four-lane to a six-lane highway to provide three travel lanes in each direction Redesigning the highway’s alignments to meet current design standards and enhance safety Reconfiguring various ramps and interchanges to meet current design standards Adding paired one-way frontage roads in select locations Converting existing two-way frontage roads to one-way operations where it’s warranted This project will require the acquisition of new right of way from adjacent property owners.
