Immunization program support in Ethiopia in collaboration with Gavi, Phase III

The aim of the project is to reduce child mortality and morbidity in Ethiopia by financing vaccination campaigns. The contribution is being made through a bilateral grant of EUR 25 million to the vaccination programme of the global vaccination alliance (Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance) for Ethiopia. This is to finance vaccines for routine vaccinations for children up to the age of 5 who are not adequately vaccinated, as severe respiratory and diarrheal diseases are still among the main causes of death among children in Ethiopia and can be prevented through vaccination. The programme thus contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of strengthening and improving the health and well-being of the population. The project is being implemented through the Ethiopian Expanded Programmes of Immunization. The vaccines are being provided through the procurement mechanisms of Gavi and UNICEF. The funds are part of the EUR 600 million pledge made by Germany to Gavi by Chancellor Angela Merkel in January 2015. The first two bilateral contributions amounting to EUR 25 million were made in 2016 and 2017.
