Description
Description | Almost 1 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar live in 33 overcrowded camps in Coxs Bazar, one of the poorest districts in Bangladesh and one of the most threatened by natural disasters. Their access to high-quality WASH services and child and youth protection remain inadequate. The project promotes the general health, well-being, resilience and protection from violence and neglect of Rohingya refugees in the camps and vulnerable people in the neighboring host communities. The project objectives include, on the one hand, providing the target group with fair, inclusive and hygienic access to water and sanitation services (Component 1 WASH). On the other hand, children and young people should be better protected from all forms of violence, exploitation and neglect through fair and inclusive access to high-quality child protection services and benefit from a strengthened environment (Component 2 Child and Youth Protection). A main objective of this project, which has a significant influence on the project design, is the promotion of gender equality. Key measures to achieve the objective include the construction, upgrading and maintenance of additional water supply networks, latrines and faecal sludge treatment plants, the procurement and distribution of menstrual hygiene kits (component 1), the construction of eleven additional and the expansion of 15 existing multi-purpose centers, individual case management for 6,000 young victims of violence, the training of young social change agents within the community and the sensitization and mobilization of communities to combat harmful and discriminatory social norms and practices (component 2). The project is being implemented by UNICEF in Coxs Bazar. The target group is Rohingya who have fled Myanmar and residents of the host communities. |
