Improved water supply and sewerage systems in Romania’s Timiș County

Work on the water supply system includes refurbishment of 1.9 km of transmission pipeline, 6.8 km of distribution network pipe, a drinking water treatment plant in the town of Deta, two pumping stations and three storage tanks.The distribution network is to be extended by 2.8 km, while two pumping stations, two chlorination plants and two storage tanks are to be built. Further work takes place on three boreholes for water catchment, and three supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems are to be installed for controlling network processes and gathering data.For the waste water collection and treatment system, the project consists of construction of main sewage collectors 2.5 km in length and refurbishment of a further 0.2 km. The sewerage network is to be extended by 36.2 km and an additional 0.8 km of the network is to be upgraded. Construction takes place of 14 waste water pumping stations and a small waste water treatment plant in the town of Buziaș.European funding over two phasesThe total budget for the project’s second phase amounts to more than EUR 17.6 million, of which around EUR 10.8 million is supplied from European Union funds. The EU funded the first phase of the project – under which the majority of the work was carried out – to the tune of more than EUR 75 million.Over both phases, the project covers the drinking water and waste water collection and treatment services for the municipalities of Buziaş, Ciacova, Deta, Făget, Gătaia, Jimbolia, Recaş, Săcălaz and Sânnicolau Mare, as well as the agglomeration of Timişoara, seat of Timiş County and Romania’s third largest city. The second phase specifically covers the municipalities of Sanmihaiu Roman and Utvin within the Timisoara urban area, as well as Buziaş, Deta, Jimbolia and Recaş.Reducing public health risks and environmental pollutionThe principal objectives of the second phase are to ensure the continuous provision of clean drinking water, and the reduction of risks to human health and pollution of the environment for about 22 000 inhabitants.As a result of the work, 99.2 % of the area’s population will be connected to the drinking water network, while the entire population will have access to the sewage system. The efficiency of the networks will be improved, with water losses from the infrastructure reduced by between 5 and 10 %. Moreover, the risk of uncontrolled discharge of untreated waste water will be minimised and the quality of both underground and surface waters improved.Total investment and EU fundingTotal investment for the project “Extension and modernisation of water supply and waste water treatment systems in Timiș County - Phase II” is EUR 17 613 550, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 10 869 807 through the “Large Infrastructure” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period.
