Improving Capacity to Negotiate the FTAA

2.1 The general objective of the project is to enhance the capacity of Belize to develop negotiating positions in the context of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) process that are both technically rigorous and which have been consulted with the various stakeholders in Belizean society. 2.2 To this end, the project will seek to undertake a number of activities: 1) improve the knowledge of Belizean officials on market access in agricultural products as on market access in the area of services; 2) enhance consultation and coordination with civil society and the private sector; 3) address some of the informational challenges faced by Belize both at the specialist level through the enhancement of a resource centre and at the popular level through the establishment of a website; and 4) assist the Directorate General for Foreign Trade to participate more effectively in trade negotiations and information gathering processes through the financing of a number of computers.
