Improving child survival and development, Phase II

The transitional aid measure builds on the experience of the previous phase I and continues to support UNICEF in the implementation of its country program in the area of improving the chances of survival and development of children. The measure is embedded in the UNICEF country program, which aims to improve the chances of survival of children and maternal health. UNICEF is pursuing a multi-sectoral approach to increase preventive behavior among the population and the use of health services. The special focus is on the areas of nutrition (prevention and treatment of malnutrition), WASH (improving access to clean drinking water and sanitation, improved hygiene behavior), HIV/AIDS (education, counseling and testing) and, as part of the top-up funding of EUR 2 million, reproductive health (family planning, pre- and post-care examinations, professionally assisted births). The measures are aimed at ensuring basic health care in the health facilities in the project area and help to increase the use of health services and promote health-related behavior among the population. The activities primarily include small-scale rehabilitation measures, procurement and provision of essential medicines and equipment according to the needs of the facility, education and awareness-raising measures in communities and schools, and training of health personnel and teachers. As in the previous phase, the geographical focus of the measures is on the three health districts of Mao, Moussoro and Bokoro in the triangle formed by the regions of Kanem, Barh El Gazal and Hadjer Lamis. The direct target group includes children under five, pregnant and breastfeeding women, primary school children and young people. The recipient of funding and sponsor of the project is UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund.
