The civil war in Syria, which has been going on for four years, has caused massive refugee movements to neighboring countries. The regional project supports basic infrastructure projects in the neighboring countries of Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and Egypt. The influx of refugees is putting a strain on the already scarce resources and social infrastructure, particularly in districts close to the border in the host countries. It can be assumed that the situation will continue to worsen and that refugees will not be able to return to Syria for the time being. The aim of the FC measure is to contribute to stabilizing Syria's neighboring countries and improving resilience in the current crisis by quickly improving basic infrastructure, creating employment opportunities in the host communities and giving refugees access to education and sustainable water and sanitation supplies, child welfare measures, basic health care and food security. These sectors are the direct responsibility of specialized UN organizations. The measures focus on areas with a high refugee presence. The target group includes both Syrian refugees and the local population in the host communities. The total cost of supporting neighboring countries and refugees under the Syria Regional Refugee Resilience Plan (3RP) is estimated by UN organizations to be USD 4.5 billion in 2015. The submitted audit of EUR 8 million will partially finance the further financing needs of UNDP (UN Development Program) in Lebanon in continuation of the German contribution. UNDP implements investment programs in host communities.
