Improving traffic safety and flow on main road 70 Onkamo–Niirala

Main road 70 forms Northern Karelia’s main connection to the Niirala border station. Along with an increase in traffi c volume, traffi c safety risks are also increasing. In particular, the risk of accidents involving light (non-motorised) traffi c has increased. Th e goal of the project was to improve traffi c safety on the road and the fl ow of heavy trucking traffi c using small procedures and, therefore, to promote trade between Russia and Finland as well as other interaction. Th e intention was to build a subway for light traffi c beneath the road by the Peijonniemi school, to add bypass areas to intersections and to increase road lighting. 50 percent of the project funding was received from the European Regional Development fund and 50 percent from the Finnish Road Administration.
