Description

Description

Incheon International Airport refurbished with technological prowess of Hyundai E&CIncheon International Airport Terminal 2, built on a land area of about 390,000 square meters, consists of five floors above ground and two basement levels. The grand opening of the new second terminal is expected to deal with the growing volume of travelers in the first terminal. The existing passenger terminal has been serving about 54 million passengers a year. The second terminal can handle an additional 18 million passengers and boost overall cargo capacity. To successfully carry out the large-scale national project, Incheon International Airport Corporation divided the Passenger Terminal 2 project into about 80 construction packages. Hyundai E&C was awarded the deal valued at approximately 450 billion won to conduct interior finishing work and construct additional facilities, beating seven major local builders with its reasonable bidding price.Hyundai E&C began interior construction in May 2015. It found it fairly difficult to adapt the construction of inner walls, ceilings and floors to suit the exteriors and frameworks built by other construction companies. Even worse, although the previous construction work was three months behind schedule, it was impossible to delay the construction schedule as the opening day of the new terminal was already set to handle travelers for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. To solve this problem, starting in September 2015, Hyundai E&C performed almost all construction procedures at the same time. Furthermore, the builder put in as many as 2,300 workers per day around November 2016.The new Terminal 2 pursued three concepts including “eco,” “art” and “smart” from the design stage. In line with this, about 95 percent of indoor lights were designed to use energy-efficient LED light bulbs. For the landscaping area in the new second terminal, about three times larger than that of the first terminal, the construction company made the best use of 25,000 trees and 734,000 shrubs. The new passenger terminal is often called the “art-port” as artworks are displayed all over the airport. Among them, the grand ceiling at the ticketing hall reveals the most compelling artistic beauty. The main ceiling is made up of thousands of small louvers crossing the main structures, creating a beautifully curved ladder shape. In addition, the new terminal has a high ceiling height: the ceilings are 10 meters high on average, and the height from the floor and to the highest point of the ceiling reaches 50 meters. For the high place work to be done, Hyundai E&C installed large-scale scaffolds and complied with safety-related regulations in a thorough manner. The Terminal 2 project was considered a series of challenges in that it was a national project of utmost importance and involved unique characteristics of an airport with a large volume of space. For example, it took two hours each for workers to enter and leave the construction site because the inside of the airport was designated as a security area after the new terminal started test operation. Thanks to technological expertise and construction capabilities amassed from Hyundai E&C’s prior involvement in Al Ain International Airport in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, Indonesia, and Changi Airport in Singapore, the second passenger terminal of Incheon International Airport will serve as a new landmark reflecting the inherent dynamism of Korea.
