Description
Description | Hyundai E&C completes mecca for Korea’s marine tourismIncheon Port Authority crafted the so-called Golden Harbor project with the aim to resolve inefficiencies in the divided operation of the existing International Passenger Terminal at the Incheon Port as well as to create a demand for world-class marine tourism by constructing a cruise ship port, a multi-purpose shopping mall and a hotel. Out of the three-phase project into which a total of 670.5 billion won is funneled, Hyundai E&C was awarded the phase 2 construction valued at 268.0 billion won on a turn-key basis. Starting in November 2013, the construction of the port was completed in March 2018, enabling one 150,000-ton cruise ship, one 50,000-ton car ferry and six 30,000-ton car ferries to be berthed at the same time. The construction site was faced with a series of unexpected incidents even at the early stage of the project. Hyundai E&C opted to use the Deep Cement Mixing (DCM) method. While working on drilling the ocean floor, the builder found out waste rock layers much harder than expected in the design phase. What’s worse was that the complicated construction procedure and the increasing costs made the subcontractor pull out of the project. As a last resort, all employees working at the construction site decided to step into the construction work and directly manage it. As a result of their concerted effort, the DCM construction could be completed in a successful way in 14 months. In addition, many complications took place during the fabrication of caissons. As soon as the project began, there was an urgent need to build 31 caissons each of which weighs up to 8,500 tons and is 20 meters high. The around-the-clock caisson placement work enabled the builder to finish the production of caissons in eight months. The construction site is attempting to turn failure into success in order to take another leap forward. Officials from Singapore’s JTC Corporation are planning to make a visit to the construction site in the near future to take a closer look at a construction method using steel bars to bind offshore concrete floating structures. The construction site and R&D Center of Hyundai E&C joined forces to implement the construction technology for the first time in Korea. The successful completion of this project is expected to give an opportunity for Hyundai E&C to export the cutting-edge technology to Singapore. |
